That is a sad day in American history.

The guitar market has been contracting for years. Kids these days do not want to be the next Jimmy Page, Angus Young or Slash.

It's a prestigious trademark, but that's about it.

Yup. Stand up on your feet, try, learn stuff without being forced to, and no TV or video games for a hour or two a day??? No way!

Looks like the guitar part of their business was doing fine (and growing) but they purchased an electronics company overseas and that has gone bust causing the bankruptcy.

The TEAC deal was a bad decision as the consumer electronics market is shrinking too. They acquired a lot of good brand names (Cerwin Vega, TASCAM, Phillips, Stanton, etc) but took on too much debt.

Guitar Center is having financial trouble as well. They just laid off a bunch of people at their corporate HQ. The musical instrument market in general is down.

Max your credit, deploy golden parachute, sell the shell, they all roll the same. OR merge.

Gibson has priced themselves out of the market. There are better guitars cheaper all over the place. $4000 for a Les Paul that still has to be set up and has electronic issues right out of the box? No thanks.
