What happens to the molds after something is retired? Are they sold and that's why others duplicate?

Not sold. YPS retired molds are usually worn out. They go into a one of several big retirement drawers.
I'm clearly not very bright.

I thought they were ground up and used to lubricate the wheels of pinewood derby cars.

Good. I'm glad they aren't sold. It kinda ticked me off to think other companies were benefitting from our ideas. I say "OUR" because I feel part of the team in a sense lol.

If I understand your question correctly, the reason why you see other smiths doing some of the same bars, is because the "off-the-shelf" graphite mold was from a 3rd-party.

Unless YPS has some sort of exclusivity agreement ($$$) re: a particular mold, then it's available to anybody & everybody.

And this is why you try to design & cut your own molds whenever possible. ;)

Of course, that doesn't necessarily stop another smith from using that idea... Only odds are, their take on a design will turn out somewhat differently (for better or worse).

BTW, this doesn't only happen with poured bars, but also sand-casted pieces, as well (often with varying degrees of quality).
