Russia throws doubt on joint lunar space station with U.S

Moscow may abandon a project to build a space station in lunar orbit in partnership with U.S. space agency NASA because it does not want a "second fiddle role," a Russian official said on Saturday.

Russia agreed last year to work with the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on plans for the moon-orbiting Deep Space Gateway, which will serve as a staging post for future missions.

But the head of Russian space agency Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, said Russia might exit the joint program and instead propose its own lunar orbit space station project.

"The Russian Federation cannot afford to play the second fiddle role in it," he was quoted as saying by the RIA news agency, without much further elaboration.

Jeff Bezos will invest “just over $1 billion” next year in Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket program, and the company will fly people to space “this coming year,” the Amazon.com Inc. chief executive said Wednesday.

Jeff Bezos' space company Blue Origin just landed a major rocket deal

Blue Origin, the space company founded by Jeff Bezos, has won a contract to supply its next-generation engines for the massive rocket United Launch Alliance (ULA) is developing, a person familiar with the negotiations told CNBC.

The company's BE-4 engine, the thunderous staple of Blue Origin's propulsion business, will power ULA's Vulcan rocket: A new heavy lift vehicle being built to compete with SpaceX for lucrative commercial and military contracts.

Jeff Bezos explains why Blue Origin is 'the most important work I'm doing'

•Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said his company Blue Origin is trying to build low-cost infrastructure that can reduce the expenses of space travel.

•There are plenty of energy and resources in the solar system for future generations, he explained, but most of that would be inaccessible unless the cost of space travel can be reduced.

•Lowering the cost can help the next generation become space entrepreneurs, Bezos said at a gala organized by the Partnership for Public Service in Washington D.C on Tuesday.

Mid-Air Rocket Failure Forces Emergency Landing For US, Russia Space Crew

A Russian Soyuz booster rocket has failed in mid-air less than two minutes after take-off on Thursday, forcing the crew to make an emergency landing with the help of NASA and technicians on the ground.

Russian cosmonaut Aleksey Ovchinin and NASA astronaut Nick Hague were en route to the International Space Station in the Soyuz MS-10 spacecraft; however the booster suffered engine failure based on an apparent malfunction a mere 119 seconds after liftoff, causing them to have to immediately abort the mission.

Next US moon landing will be by private companies, not NASA

America’s next moon landing will be made by private companies — not NASA.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine announced Thursday that nine U.S. companies will compete to deliver experiments to the lunar surface. The space agency will buy the service and let private industry work out the details on getting there, he said.

SpaceX, Boeing design risks threaten new delays for US space program

NASA has warned SpaceX and Boeing Co of design and safety concerns for their competing astronaut launch systems, according to industry sources and a new government report, threatening the U.S. bid to revive its human spaceflight program later this year.

NASA is paying SpaceX $2.6 billion and Boeing $4.2 billion to build rocket and capsule launch systems to return astronauts to the International Space Station from U.S. soil for the first time since America's Space Shuttle program went dark in 2011.

Oops.

ORLANDO, Fla., Feb 15 (Reuters) - NASA said on Friday it was weighing an option to buy two additional astronaut seats aboard a Russian rocket as a contingency plan against further delays in the launch systems being developed by Elon Musk's SpaceX and Boeing Co at a cost of about $80 million/seat.

Sounds to me like a disgruntled NASA engineer who doesn't like the fact private companies are taking his job...

Or that these vehicles are so far behind schedule that they are still developing critical hardware and software that should have been done and tested over a year ago...

Israeli Private Moon Probe Lifts Off on Space X Rocket

Israel seeks to become only the fourth country to successfully land on the moon, after Russia, the U.S. and China. The spacecraft — called Beresheet, Hebrew for Genesis or "In The Beginning" — will take nearly two months to reach the moon.

"We thought it's about time for a change, and we want to get little Israel all the way to the moon," said Yonatan Winetraub, co-founder of Israel's SpaceIL , a nonprofit organization behind the effort.

America's newest crew capsule rockets toward space station

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — America's newest capsule for astronauts rocketed Saturday toward the International Space Station on a high-stakes test flight by SpaceX.

The only passenger was a life-size test dummy, named Ripley after the lead character in the "Alien" movies. SpaceX needs to nail the debut of its crew Dragon capsule before putting people on board later this year.

Seems like space travel is the only technology that has gone backwards in 50 years. Six alleged moon landings between 1969-1974. Now they can't get their sh@t together and have to hitch-hike? I smell a rat :?

Spectacular launch. It truly is a beautiful site to see. I have to smile when I hear people comment that the American public just is not that interested anymore in our space program. Ha. Tell that to the wall to wall spectators down here at 2:30 in the morning to witness the launch. Cocoa Beach and here in Cape Canaveral was packed. No rooms available. Traffic was bumper to bumper. All to see a one minute launch. Yes. It is that awesome to see.

Agreed, and I would add that there couldn't be waste and corruption without deception and misinformation.

My bucket list item, see the SpaceX BFR/Spaceship One combo launch... more power than the Saturn 5 and able to lift 150 tons to orbit! If they get it working it can spark a building boom in orbit. And that is what we need! Once we have a permanent habitat in orbit and manufacturing for spacecraft that never have to reach the ground we will see the space race takeoff! Asteroid mining is just one thing that will bring a boom!
