The best band you never heard of.

I'm clearly not very bright.

It's freaking raining again so I'm indoors on a Saturday again, I spent a good part of the day cleaning my office and going through the CD collection. Here's a few selections from one of my favorite guilty pleasures.

I'm warning you upfront. This band is weird--one of those groups that just doesn't fit into any genre neatly. Industrial Punk Metal perhaps. They take their name from a famous Ayn Rand quote and apparently "like [their] coffee black, just like [their] metal"

Check out the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. A cool indie band I first heard on WXPN (University of Penn) radio a few years back. Again, it's hard to pinpoint the style. It has an artsy theatrical kind of bend that makes me think of Kate Bush, Siouxsie and the Banshees (ooooh. that'd be a good one for this thread) and early Tori Amos. Anyhow, hope you enjoy.

How about something a little more upbeat.

I don't think it would be a stretch to say that these Aussie lads don't take themselves too serious. Most of their videos are equal parts sketch comedy and music. Mainly they are a metal act, but if that's not your style, just hang in there a minute and they'll switch it up. Metal, Jazz, Funk, Salsa, even Kodo. There is definitely a Faith No More/Mr. Bungle influence here.

Recently while looking for a YouTube link for "Welcome to the Jungle" by Guns N' Roses (for another thread here), I stumbled upon this guy...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=isZZWDMpw3Y

Sounds like a mix of Axl Rose & Sam Kinison!

Does a good job, IMO. I believe he's just some dude who does covers over instrumental tracks (kinda like karaoke), and then uploads them to YouTube.

Another nice one of his. Kind of a Joe Cocker vibe? Kick-ass version...!

Somehow, after watching some other stuff, eventually I stumbled upon this...

14-year-old girl on Ukraine's kid's version of "The Voice"

Give it a minute for the song to warm up.

Nope, of course not.

Weird thing is, Axl is a baritone (or bass-baritone, depending on which music nerd who has too much time on his hands, you ask  ). But bottom line, he's got a pretty deep voice (I'm leaning towards bass-baritone), even during interviews from the early days.

Dude just knows how to use his voice. And apparently his range is almost 6 octaves.

Anyway, that Juan dude can go pretty deep, too...
