I live in Panama City Beach up on the panhandle of Florida. Gov. Scott has closed all schools in the state including here. There plan is to use them as shelters for all the South Floridians that have evacuated.

nice to hear from you silvermotor, been a while
glad you're safe, but why not evacuate yourselves if you're in Broward county ???
if the winds stay at 140ish for an hour on shore, Broward is probably looking at a 30-50% loss of homes at a minimum.
please don't risk it.

Life commitments preclude leaving...
we certainly considered that option.

Thanks for your concerns,

They keep moving this more and more west. May get more of Irma in the panhandle than I expected.

Atlanta is giving free tickets to their games against the Marlins this weekend to anyone from Florida, and certain counties in GA and SC. I don't know if evacuees will be in a frame of mind to enjoy a baseball game, but it's still a nice gesture.

Right after Katrina, LSU was supposed to play a football game against ASU at home. The game was relocated to ASU's stadium with LSU still being called the home team. Any evacuees in the Phoenix area were offered free tickets to the game. I was at that game, and it seemed to me that everyone bent over backwards to help LSU players, fans, and evacuees feel comfortable. I thought it was a good way to get their minds off of things. I think it would have certainly been better than sitting on a cot in some random gym all night thinking about what was left of their house back in New Orleans.

Hurricane Irma: High winds cause cranes to collapse in Miami

Moving the cranes would have taken two weeks, city officials said.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/hurricane- ... collapses/

Gosh, if only we had known about Irma and Florida 2 weeks ago, which was what, August 26?

Oh wait, we did.

from August 18:

Tropical Storm Irma may be headed for Florida

http://www.weathersphere.com/tropical-storm-irma-may-be-headed-for-florida/

Of course, the path was never definitive until it was too late, so no need to waste money on taking them down. Until and unless it becomes cheaper to do that vs pay for and damages and lawsuits from not doing so. Sad.

I have an Aunt who has stayed in her home in Naples. She would not leave her pets behind, 6 large exotic birds and 2 cats. She is 79 years old and lives for her pets. I know that she lives about 6 miles from the beach but lives on the bottom floor of her condo. Hopefully we will hear from her soon.

Buy your oranges and other favorite produce that grows in FL now. Oranges harvest starts in October. Citrus crop is anticipated to take a 50% hit.

My sister lives about 5 houses down from the intercostal North of Ft Laurdardale. They packed up and headed out of the State fearing the worst from the early forecasts. Other than a few trees down and no power they came out ok. I hope all the rest of our Florida members friends/family will be ok as well.

A local Pizza Hut wanted their workers to wait until the last minute to flee Irma, and also said they MUST return 72 hours afterwards. (Even though there will likely be no power by then.)

My guys I have living in Miami still don't have power. He said other than his new fence getting beat up pretty bad and some trees down, not having power was about the worst.

FCC Chairman wants Apple to enable FM in iPhones for emergencies

"Apple is the one major phone manufacturer that has resisted (activating the chips)," said Pai in a statement. "But I hope the company will reconsider its position, given the devastation wrought by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria."

We made out like bandits. I hate to say it knowing so many people didn't, but we didn't loose power or internet the whole storm. This thing shifted west and spared us the bad part. The eye was on track (for days) to come right over my place. I hope everyone is ok on the west coast and keys. Lack of media coverage on Keys... (makes me ask questions)

I saw a bunch of coverage of the Keys: lots of devastation and destruction. Until Maria came along and did much, much worse to PR, and coverage shifted there.

Then coverage seemed to tail off, until the last few days when it has re-started. Seems PR has a huge bottleneck at one entry point, stuff piling up and unable to get where it is needed.

I have bunch of our guys going to the Keys next week to do storm assessments on some of our customers. They are saying it still looks like a war zone down there.
