Hamming it up

Postby Silvertongue » Fri Jan 09, 2015

This may not be of a lot of interest to most... but it sure tickles me.

I set all my ham radio equipment aside when I moved across the country. Having recently renewed my license, I started getting out the radios and dusting them off. My 2-meter handheld needed a new battery. Since the radio cost $200+ just a few years ago, I figured a new battery at $59 was a fair expense.

But out of curiosity, I decided to see what new radios are running. Holy chinatown! There's a brand out there now (Baofeng) with models that run $30-$40. Skeptical? You bet I was. But the reviews and research convinced me I couldn't lose on a try. I settled on this one, the UV-82 - $34.50 delivered from Amazon.

While my old handy-talky had only two meters, this one covers both VHF and UHF ham frequencies. It gets police, fire, hospital frequencies... the range is fantastic. It also picks up (very darn well) the FM radio band and NOAA weather radio. A spare battery cost me about $10. I didn't need it. I charged the original at Christmas. Although not heavily, I do use it every day and I'm still powering off the first charge. Are you kidding me??!

The transmission and reception are right up there. I also bought a new antenna, but eh... I could have stayed with the stock one. It's pretty effective.

Anyone can pick these up, with two caveats: 1) You must have a license to operate on the Ham bands. 2) You MUST be careful when listening to emergency services because these radios would/could allow you to broadcast on their frequencies, a huge no-no.

A couple of these and you've also got some first class walkie-talkies (just mind where you play on those frequencies). Great surprise all around.

(Have to admit, I was tempted to write this post in broken English so it would look like a plant by the company. Which reminds me, the instructions for manually programming the radio are horrific. I finally skipped them and went to YouTube. Much better. You can also pick up a cable and program it from the computer, but having conquered the manual method, I'll put that cash into PMs. )

Cheers,

N7ZFF
