Billionaire Yuri Milner's Breakthrough Initiatives Eyes Private Mission to Seek Alien Life

Government agencies may not have a monopoly on life-hunting space missions for much longer.

Breakthrough Initiatives, which already scans the heavens for possible signals from faraway alien civilizations, is considering looking for E.T. on worlds close to home, founder Yuri Milner said.

"We are thinking very seriously about solar system-based initiatives," Milner said here Sunday (Nov. 4) at the seventh annual Breakthrough Prize ceremony at NASA's Ames Research Center. "We're thinking, within our foundation, is there something we can do, privately funded, which will supplement the government-funded projects?"

The reverse Pinocchio effect: Your nose actually SHRINKS when you lie because its temperature drops

Scientists showed the temperature of your nose lowers when you tell a lie

•This causes it to shrink - though the change is imperceptible to the human eye
•The team designed a lie detector test that tracks the temperature of your face
•It picked out fibbers with an accuracy rate of 80 per cent

In China’s New Space Odyssey, 80 Startups Race to Get Into Orbit

Space is corporate China’s newest frontier, as Chinese startups prepare to boldly go head-to-head with the likes of Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin LLC for a slice of the space market.

It is still a risky business that must overcome complex technical challenges, as a high-profile rocket-launch failure over northwest China showed in late October. But with about 80 commercial Chinese space-technology startups now operating and competition heating up, the breakthroughs are likely to soon outnumber the disappointments, analysts say.

I hope that "transportation incentive" doesn't include Metro (our subway), which can't handle the current load, even though that load has been declining.

These sources told CNBC that a final decision is "close" and may come down to Northern Virginia or Austin, Texas — or perhaps a split between both cities.

Go away Amazon. Pick Austin.

NY taxpayers to pay $48,000 per Amazon HQ job

New York state is kicking in more than $1.5 billion in taxpayer-funded incentives for getting half of Amazon's second headquarters located in a section of Queens.

Bezos Backlash Begins: Socialist Democrats Decry Amazon HQ2 "Burden" On NYC

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the youngest woman ever elected to Congress, who won her seat following an upset primary victory in the spring over former House leadership member Joe Crowley, is taking a break from her desperate quest to find an affordable Washington DC apartment to stoke public anger against Amazon on behalf of the voters in her district, which includes parts of north-central Queens that are adjacent to LIC.

In a series of tweets published Wednesday, Cortez claimed that residents in her district are "outraged" by Amazon's decision to move to NYC.

I'm sure VA and/or the localities involved gave something similar, but I haven't heard any numbers yet. What we know was discussed is some sort of re-naming or "re-branding" of the area(s) involved, into something called National Landing. I don't know how well that will go over around here.

It's seriously nuts in this area about this - at least one local station (the NBC affiliate) is preempting regular programming tonight to run a 1/2 hour special on Amazon's arrival.

Could the marriage or collaboration between government and corporations to benefit the corporations and not the people be more blatant?

The figure from Virginia is roughly 1/2 a billion dollars, so about 1/3 of the NY number.

Companies play cities and states against each other just like sports teams that want a new stadium do. The DC football team wants one, hopefully this takes VA out of the mix for that.

I have to agree with Stossell

Amazon often tries to get favors from government. It didn't just announce a second headquarters. It started a competition to see which politicians would give it the largest tax incentives.

"Give me a break," Stossel says. "Politicians shouldn't pander to companies, and companies shouldn't pander to politicians. I wish Bezos would stick to innovating, not scheming with politicians to get special breaks. Some of the worst enemies of capitalism are capitalists

There are two ways sports teams should be owned, by the city (fans) that built the stadium with taxpayer money (like the nonprofit Green bay) or by public share holders like the Boston Celtics were. Sports teams should not be owned any other way.

This Good Ol Boys Cartel of sports teams ownership has got to go.

Easier said than done.

I do see a big financial shake-up on the horizon for the world of sports, though. Remember when we were talking about the DirecTV vs HBO lawsuit? We figured out that the money is dwindling as people move to online streaming services. Teams have huge $$ TV deals in MLB with more to kick in soon, and they are counting on that revenue to pay the player contracts they are currently offering. I'm thinking the money won't be there down the road, as the old TV services continue to struggle. I don't think it will be pretty if/when SHTF. I don't follow any other sports closely, but I'll guess it will be similar across the board.

Crony Capitalism: Democrats Give Away $2 Billion in Welfare to Amazon

From New York, Amazon will receive tax breaks of $1.525 billion in exchange for building a four million square foot facility in Long Island City that includes 25,000 jobs.

Basically, it will cost the taxpayers of New York $48,000 for each one of those jobs.

New York’s governor, Andrew Cuomo, is a left-wing Democrat .

Virginia has offered Amazon $573 million in exchange for a guarantee of 25,000 jobs.

Virginia’s governor is Ralph Northam, a left-wing Democrat.

Please note that in 2017, Amazon made $5.6 billion in profit and not only paid zero in federal income tax, it received a $137 million tax refund.

This is exactly how crony capitalism works.

"This is exactly how crony capitalism works." Really?

Alt-right Briebart complaining of crony capitalism? What is wrong with this picture?

Breitbart: OMG, Amazon didn't pay any taxes? Maybe the tax laws should be changed to avoid profitable corporations not having to pay any taxes.
No wait, let's rethink that.
